The scintillator foil converts X-ray photons to light, which is then directly converted into electronic charge by the photodiode and is passed on to the computer for digital image processing. Digital detectors provide sharp X-ray images without distortion and a very good signal-to-noise-ratio. They are particularly useful in 3D Computed Tomography.
